To gain experience in this skill, you need to tame wolves/ocelots or get into combat with your wolves. Select other activities, such as using axolotls to slay guardians, will also give taming experience.
Beast Lore (Active ability) Level 1
This ability allows you to inspect your wolves, horses, or ocelots by left-clicking them with a bone. This will display their owner and their current health. Note that left-clicking with anything else will damage your pet.
Call of the Wild (Active ability) Level 5
This ability allows players to summon loyal animal companions to their side. By holding 10 bones for a wolf, 10 raw fish for an ocelot, or 10 apples for a horse, players can perform a simple action to summon the desired animal.
To activate the ability, left-click into the air while crouching.
Environmentally Aware (Active ability) Level 10
This ability allows your summoned wolves to teleport to you when nearing cacti or lava, increasing the efficiency of the wolves' ability to attack when engaging in PvP with another player. This also allows your wolf to be immune to fall damage.
Gore (Passive ability) Level 15
When tamed wolves attack a target, this passive ability adds a chance that they will inflict a critical strike that applies bleed. The chance of Goring the target increases to a maximum of 100% at mastery level 100.
Fast Food Service (Passive ability) Level 20
Gives your wolves a 50% chance to heal on attack and give you a small amount of saturation (food). This ability is excellent in 1.19 as additional saturation allows you to heal more quickly when in combat.
Thick Fur (Passive ability) Level 25
With this passive ability, your wolves take 50% less damage. This is the best ability by far when you want your wolves to survive.
Shock Proof (Passive ability) Level 50
This passive ability causes your wolves to take 84% less damage from explosions.
"I solved our little creeper problem"
Pummel (Passive ability) Level 20
Wolves will inflict additional knockback. Note that enemies that are immune to knockback (such as the Warden/Iron Golems) will not be effected by this ability.
Holy Hound (Passive ability) Level 35
Causes your wolves to be healed by poison or other usually negative effects.
Sharpened Claws (Passive ability) Level 75
This passive ability makes your wolves deal an extra four damage per hit (2 hearts) when the skill is used by your wolves in combat. Wolves will deal a total of 10 damage (5 hearts) at mastery level 100.
Keep in mind that these mobs have to interact with the world in specific ways to grant taming experience. These mechanics are generally separate from breeding.
